Pierre-Joseph Redouté, who painted the exquisite images reproduced in this album, is revered the world over as a master in the art of depicting that most beautiful and romantic of flowers, the rose. Redouté was an eighteenth-century Frenchman whose patroness was the Empress Josephine. She created one of the most beautiful rose gardens the world had ever known, and chose Redouté to record the different species growing in it. The result was the beautiful flower studies in this album. Redouté imbued his rose paintings with such delicacy and subtlety of colour that one can almost smell each bloom.
